CHOIR REPORT for the year 2007

The Ad Hoc choir had another successful year commencing with the performance of John Stainer's `The Crucifixion' at Easter, with soloists Stephen Fletcher (tenor) and David Hadley (bass). Thanks must go to Su (conductor) for her hard work and dedication to detail and of course the reward of a chocolate at the end of rehearsal. The choir would of course find it difficult without an organist and once again thanks must go to Nick Fanthom for his hard work (hours of practice ) and usual high standard of playing. It was also very pleasing to be so well supported both in the choir and as importantly in the number of people who came to listen. A good audience always gives the choir that little boost which transforms a good performance into a very good performance.
Easter soon passes and already it is time to start thinking about the programme for the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols. It is always difficult to ensure that the music is neither too simple nor too difficult, the tightrope of the middle ground is a challenge in itself. This year I decided that a carol from Botswana might be of sufficient difficulty (both words and music!) and also provide something upbeat and different. It went down well (with the choir and hopefully the congregation) and is definitely an addition to the repertoire. It was also wonderful to have a new soloist for the first verse of Once in Royal David's City and especially one so young, - Lisa Fanthom - who seemed to exude confidence and gave an excellent performance. Well done Lisa!
I must thank everybody who took part and worked so hard to achieve an excellent result. I am very fortunate to have the continued support of both Su Dymond (rehearsal accompanist & singer) and Nick Fanthom (organist & singer), to whom I extend my thanks.
Currently the Ad Hoc choir has just commenced rehearsals for the performance of John Rutter's beautiful and haunting' Requiem' which is to be performed on Good Friday, March 21st 2008 at St Paul's. Su Dymond is once more taking to the stroppy box to conduct this marvelous work and Nick Fanthom (organ) will be joined by an oboist and cellist.
Finally, I wish to thank the Clergy, Churchwardens, St Paul's PCC and the congregation for all their support over the last twelve months.
.                                                                      David Hadley
