Our Children's Outreach Worker Jodi Jones has continued to build relationships with local primary schools and to support services and activities for children in the five churches - St. Paul's, St. Giles', Central, Hurst Green and Long Lane - in the following ways.
School's Work - Jodi held 16 assemblies at Highfields, Hurst Green, Rowley Hall and Olive Hill and took 4 RE lessons at Rowley Hall, Blackheath Primary and Olive Hill schools. A Chess Club has been run every Tuesday lunch time at Hurst Green and a Board Games Club was also run there for a term for Years 1 and 2. Peter Swannie and Jodi have been helping as Reading Buddies at Hurst Green on Tuesday afternoon listening to children read. Jodi has assisted with 6 church visits from Rowley Hall, Hurst Green, Blackheath and Highfields.
Church Work - Jodi led devotions for Boys Brigade at Hurst Green and Girls Brigade at Central, led Shell Group 3 times at Hurst Green, led Brownies at St. Paul's twice and took 8 children's services between the 5 churches.
Events - as part of Hope08, a very successful Big Ministries Big Party was held at Central Methodist on 28th June 2008. Two Junior Heroes holiday weeks were held from July 28th - August 1st at St. Giles and from August 4th - 8th at Hurst Green. Both events went really well.
Training - Jodi attended the Children's Ministry conference in Eastbourne, was involved in 2 holiday clubs, led an 8-13 year olds group at the Children Worldwide Conference in Dalesdown and served on the 8-11s team at Spring Harvest, Skegness;
completed  First Aid training and the Working Safely with Young People course; attended the Growing with God 2 conference and completed the Future Builders course in December.
Other activities - Jodi went into schools with Saltmine Theatre Company when they did Hope08 performances and delivered Harvest goods with children and the learning mentor from Rowley Hall. The website is now up and running at:     www.abbacus.org.uk.
It has now been confirmed that Jodi has successfully passed the final assessments of her Future Builders course work and will be awarded her certificate later in the year. We congratulate her on this achievement and thank her for all the work done for Abbacus during the year. The Management Committee was pleased to be able to extend Jodi's appointment for a further 12 months to 30th September 2009. With pledges from the churches and individuals and subject to additional funding support, the Management Committee is hopeful that it will be possible to continue employing a Children's Outreach Worker beyond that date. A summary statement of accounts for the year is attached.                                       Peter Swannie

In reviewing the activities undertaken by Abbacus in 2007, it is evident what a debt of gratitude we owe to Marcus Jones our Children's Outreach Worker who left at the end of August to take up a similar position with Churches Together in Falmouth. Marcus spent 6 years working for us and he had the greatest influence on the shape and scope of the work done by Abbacus in the 5 sponsoring churches and 8 local primary schools. In the year from September 2006 to August 2007 he led more than 50 school assemblies, was involved in at least 10 RE lessons, and 10 school visits to churches. Marcus organised weekly lunch clubs at Hurst Green and Highfields schools, an after school club at Holt Farm and acted as Playground Chaplain again at Highfields. He attended Governors' meetings at Olive Hill and Springfield schools. In the churches he took part in up to 20 church services for children and families, led brigade meetings for Anchor Boys at Hurst Green Methodist, led Ace Kids 9-14 year olds fortnightly in a Youth Alpha course at home and then at Long Lane Methodist and gave support to other church youth groups. In June Marcus arranged a Fun Day with breakfast, games, clown and bouncy castle at Hurst Green to accompany the Abbacus AGM. In August he organised two one week summer holiday clubs one at St. Paul's and one at Central Methodist based on Scripture Union 'Wastewatchers' resources. While he was here he set up and maintained the Abbacus website (abbacus.me.uk) as well as publishing quarterly newsletters.
The Management Committee was pleased to be able to appoint Joanne (Jodi) Jones to continue the work from 1st October 2007. Jodi has since made contact and established good relations with the schools, prepared and led school assemblies, continued to support the lunch club (now a chess club) at Hurst Green School and is exploring the possibility of establishing a dance workshop. Jodi organised a successful Xmas Kids Club at Hurst Green Methodist at the beginning of December and has published a newsletter. We have been pleased to support her further training in Children's Ministry for 1.5 days a week through the first year of the Futurebuilders course at Selly Oak Christian College and have extended her appointment correspondingly until 31st December 2008.
Funding for the project remains a concern particularly since grants given by the Church Urban Fund over a period of 5 years have now come to an end. Thanks to pledges of support from both St. Giles' and St. Paul's PCCs, individual members of St. Paul's and continued funding from the Blackheath Methodist Circuit, Abbacus will be fully funded to the end of December 2008. It will however be necessary to secure other sources of income for the project to continue beyond that date as we all wish. Please continue to pray for the current work of Abbacus, for Jodi and for the future funding of the project.                                                 Peter Swannie

She writes in her Newsletter . . .

I moved up to Birmingham at the beginning of August 2007 from Bracknell, Berkshire,  I got  married in July and moved up with my husband Ben, who is now studying at Birmingham Christian College, Selly Oak.

I grew up in a Christian family and when I was 8 years old realised that being a Christian is about havibg a personal relationship with God because of the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross.  Looking back I can see how important it was for me to be shown as a child the love of God through her parents and othwer Christians, in order for me to put my faith in God.
That is why I feel so privileged to have this opportunity to work with children in the local community, showing them at least something of God's love, and hopefully having a positive impact on their lives.  Please pray for God's guidance as I step into this position as Children's Outreach Worker; that I would be able to build on the work already been done in he schools and be of use to the people who work with children within each of the churches.

ABBACUS MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE

Report by Jodi Jones, Children's Outreach Worker                30th April 2008

School's work
Assemblies
I have done 7 assemblies - I at Olive Hill, 3 at Hurst Green, 2 at Rowley Hall and I at Highfields.
R.E.
Observed some R.E lessons and taken 2 lessons at Rowley Hall with Paul for Years 2 and 4.
Clubs:
Still continuing with the Chess Club every Tuesday lunch time at Hurst Green, Rowley Hall are also interested in having a lunch time club so I shall be offering them a Monday lunch time. Highfields have contacted and asked for an after school dub to be set up, so will be pursuing that.
Reading buddies
Peter and I have started helping at Hurst Green Primary on a Tuesday afternoon listening to children read.
ChurchVisits:
I've assisted with 3 church visits, all from Blackheath Primary. One visit to St Giles where I did some creative prayer and an action son, one to St. Paul's where I did a quiz and one to Central where I did a quiz and an action song.
Church work:
Groups:
Hurst Green:
Led devotion for Boy's Brigade, and led Shell group once.
St. Paul's
Led Brownies.
Central
Tried to visit Happy Hour for the second time, but no children turned up, will try again!

Children's services
Long Lane:
I did a children5 talk for a Sunday service about Lazarus and an action song
Central:
I did a children's talk for Palm Sunday and an action song.

Events
BIG Ministries
The BIG party run by BIG Ministries has been booked for Saturday June 28' 2008 and will take place at Central Methodist The times need to be confirmed, but 10am-12noon would be preferred. They offer to do posters, which we would have to print and that would cost an extra £10. They tend to run the event in one large hall rather than using different rooms.
Holiday Club
I have bought holiday club material called 'Junior Superheroes which is about children in the bible who did great things for God and by the end of the week the armour of God has been built up. We need to seta date to have a meeting and I need to advertise it asking for volunteers to help.

Publicity
The second of the four quarterly newsletters has been written and distributed with a volunteer form for the holiday club.
The website is being 'revamped' by a guy from 5cips who will also show me how to update it for the future. We went to a workshop to find out about web help and through that we have met with the guy and he has set the website back up for us, for free!

Training
I have completed my first term of the Future Builders course and completed my 4000 word assignment on planning a holiday club for 7-11 year olds. This term has been about work-place issues, and I have attended the Children's Ministry Conference in Eastbourne, been involved in a holiday club, where the majority of children were from Muslim families, leading the 8-13year olds at the Children Worldwide Conference in Dalesdown, and serving on the 8-Ils team at Spring Harvest, Skegness. One of the students has been doing some assemblies with me at the schools.
I completed a First Aid training day in February at the Diocesan Offices and Nicky Margetts from St Giles joined me.

Future plans
Schools work:
I will continue with assemblies in the schools and offer assistance again at Olive Hill with R,E lessons. I will pursue Rowley Hall about setting up a lunch time club on a Monday and discuss with Highfields the possibility of running an after school club for them.
I am now a 'Reading Buddy" for Hurst Green Primary School and will continue to do that on a Tuesday afternoon.

Church work:
I am visiting Boys Brigade next week and also seeing Richard do devotion, so that I can get an idea of what to do, and then I can have a go.
I am doing a children's talk at St Paul's in an all age service at the beginning of June. I will be leading Shell group and Brownies again in June
The BIG Party will be taking place at the end of June so I shall be advertising that and asking the schools if I can promote it in assemblies.
The Holiday Club will be taking place at the end of July and beginning of August so I shall be organising that and recruiting volunteers and then running it!

Training
Continue with Future Builders course. I have a public speaking class assessment on May 10t" and an exam on May 22"' - these will be instead of assignments.
I am helping with a holiday club as part a the course during the May half-term.
The course ends for the summer on July 4th 2008.
